Social networking and the library

I really don't see any real value of these tools for the library. I believe they were originally built for individual use. Facebook may be of value for people who need to keep in touch with friends and families across the miles. LinkedIn is more for individuals in business who are looking for a job or hiring managers looking for candidates to fill a job. It promotes the notion of "Who you Know." There seems to be so many electronic ways to connect. I think it is a pity really. I much prefer the personal touch.

Wiki vs blog

The blog is the most familiar of the two web 2.0 features and the one that patrons would be most familiar with. I as I stated earlier it is useful for a library's website for posting new item or news. I see the wiki as a tool for colaborative work and I think more useful for communications between staff. Nonetheless, I hope we don't abandoned face to face communication altogether.

Baby steps

Tough I have managed to create a blog and a wiki, I find working with them still challenging. First of all I have to remember my password, the name of my blog/wiki and where to find it. I guess I will continue to write these random thoughts until I get this down.

RSS feed in libraries

There are a number of uses for feeds in libararies. They could be used to update the services and products on the library. Patrons could receive notice on new books, guest speakers or presentations, and new electronic resources. They could also be used to promote and market the library.

Well, I just set up my google reader account. It is easy so far I hope this continues.

Flying by the seat of my pants

Hi,
This is new territory for me so no telling where it will lead if anywhere. I was thinking I was too old for this but I recently found out that some of my coworkers haven't even heard of Web 2.0. I feel like at least I am one step ahead of them. The journey continues.
